Private Archive: Hong Kong is an ongoing still-life documentary project that explores the politics, culture and history of Hong Kong through my personal artefacts. As a member of the Hong Kong diaspora and an immigrant in Britain, this project is both an act of documentation and a personal experiment—an attempt to engage with a city to which I have increasingly limited access. In response to the erasure and reshaping of Hong Kong’s cultural and historical landscape following recent political upheavals, this work reflects the urgent need, felt by many Hongkongers, to preserve even the smallest details of their city. This project is also serves as a reflection on my evolving relationship with Hong Kong and its people, as well as an assessment of how the city has shaped my cultural identity. By presenting these collected fragments, I aim to construct a narrative that speaks to both personal memory and collective history, offering a nuanced exploration of belonging, loss, and resilience.
