“As it stands most women reach old age and have to cope alone with the experience of being discursively situated as doubly Other.”
– Zoe Brennan
It is a truism to say that people reach an age where society decides they are no longer worth looking at. This is true for all genders but is particularly prominent for women. In ‘Grapefruits’ I begin to explore how intergenerational connections between women can help to dismantle anxieties towards aging and strengthen community, while aiming to challenge the ‘youthful structure of the look’ that is so prevalent in visual culture.
