Emily Clayton
(artist bio)
My project delves into the world of pheasant and partridge shooting in rural Berkshire, documenting the people and culture of these elite, high-society events. Growing up around this area, I wanted to explore the pomp and pageantry surrounding this pastime - how it’s tied to notions of status, tradition, and the idea of “Englishness.”
Through my photography, I aim to capture the contradictions in this world: the pride and privilege, as well as the pretension that accompanies these shoots. It’s a look at a centuries-old tradition still alive today, and the complex dynamics it reveals about class and culture.
