Barnaby Chinnock

You Need Only Ask

Barnaby is an ethnographic photographer, using fact and fiction blended to create a more nuanced understanding of complex subjects. He is drawn to the disruptions in the everyday, the moments of interaction with the landscape that are disregarded by us but when scrutinised by the camera it becomes a new narrative to understand ourselves. He has a large interest in supposed, ‘Englishness' and national identity and how this is performed through different rituals.

His current work focuses on the contested English village. Partly a picturesque and chocolate box ideal for those longing for wild and untamed nature. However, underneath this facade there is a deep and repressed eerie. Behind the manners and pleasantries there is an isolation in one's own politeness and stubborn nature, not able to truly talk about hard topics. I explore this visually through images I believe build a strange tension. Overgrown landscapes and anti social architecture.
